An Generosity of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Had Just Met Assisted Me Secure the Position That Changed My Life

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a friend. Because my friend was exploring starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We arrived at the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the UWS known as International House. Once we unpacked, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, took a seat, and began chatting with other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I did for a living, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an research lab at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I should apply for a role with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, returning to the canteen that evening. The Iraqi student approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away informed my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

As is common in NYC – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she declared: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I was employed there for three years. A perk of the job was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in multiple respects. I lacked the courage or nerve to approach someone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. And, I had consistently hoped to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York resulted in a job in Zurich where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
